To nablopomo or not to nablopomo
Nov. 1st, 2023 12:59 amI daily posted on two blogs last year, don't know if I'll do it again.
But, I'm keeping my options open.
Here: Have Hozier covering an Ariana Grande song.
So Wednesday Adams, Girl Detective is a thing now?
I've only seen parts a few eps as DH is watching, but I'll probably end up watching later. Even though, I baffled at how creepy child/teen Wednesday has become a thing.
It occurred to that it's almost more fanon that canon at this point. The original strips don't really lend themselves to that and the first adaption in the TV show was everything the movies aren't. From what I've seen, it's basically the only sitcom of that time period where the parents are actually competent without being a walking cliche, the parents actually like each other and family isn't all about "what will the neighbors think."
I guess it just annoys me how the newer versions took a warm, happy family and made them just another goth cliche.
I mean this ep is one of my favorites and it's pretty much the opposite of Wednesday-as-creepy-child-trope.

Nearly done
Nov. 27th, 2022 11:43 pmRunning out of fannish things to write about is you can't tell. I've resorted to flailing nonsensically about libraries for no good reason.
(Though I am 118/100 in my goodreads challenge goal. And about 90% of that are library books. That may be why.)
I've read so many books, my webtoons and AO3 reading list is unreasonable rn. Oh - I suppose I can rec webtoons. Go check it out, there is probably something for everyone, there is so much. I'm currently reading Castle Swimmer, Heartstopper, and everything by Sigeel.

Another day another Fandom?
Nov. 15th, 2022 11:11 pmNo, not really. But I have found a couple new shows to watch.
I was loafing around on HBO Max today and found a British show called Ghosts. (Apparently there's an American version that's almost a carbon copy except the ghosts are historical to the Americas rather than UK. But it's locked down on CBS so eh, whatever.) I've watched about 4 eps so far and it's entertaining enough. Funny, but not hysterically. Silly without being OTT (so far.) There's three seasons online, so I still have a lot of eps to watch.
I didn't mean to start a second show today, but when I exited Ghosts, Los Espookies, came up on the suggested list. I'd meant to check that one out, so I clicked on it to watch a few minutes. Two episodes later.... Yeah, kinda hooked. It's deeply weird; occupying a space somewhere between farce and magical realism.
So I'll probably continue to watch both (but, not planning to join any new fandoms. Today.)

Can't escape Doctor Who
Nov. 13th, 2022 09:15 pmSo, I found a post on Tumblr about a Ao3 fic randomizer someone made. Because of deleted fics, the most common result is a 404. And I got several 404's before I got an actual fic hit.
And that fic? A Thirteenth Doctor fic of course.

NaBloPoMo, fandom edition
Nov. 1st, 2022 11:22 pmSo, the plan is to daily post for Nov for NaBloPoMo. I've no idea what I'll be posting about. This is supposed to be my fandom blog, but I haven't been fangirling much lately TBH. *shrug*
I mean do keep up with MCU and Star Wars shows on Disney+ but mostly I watch house restoration, diys and educational vids on youtube.
So, this will be fun.

Jul. 16th, 2022 03:49 pmSo we found that HBOMax has New Who and with our electrical Time-of-Use rates dictated turn off all the things we can between 4-9pm, we've decided to turn that into Binge All The Things, rather than I dunno, play a board game, or clean the house, or, ya know God forbid, TALK TO EACH OTHER. (Although, as DH will attest, Junior and I drive him bonkers with our pause-and-discuss method of TV watching. SO.)
ANYWAY - I will work on posting a rewatch - first time watch- of New Who soonish. (Very ish). (Also I've finally seen Thirteen. YAY! I really like her!)
But that is not today.
Today I present 1980's-1990's music videos I watched too much and thought too much about.
( Cutting here because I'm not that much of a monster )

Random googling of the day
Jun. 18th, 2022 10:54 pmSo I typo'd "grumpy" as "glumpy" and it seemed like a worthwhile non-word word to look into.
I discovered it had already been claimed on Urban Dictionary: Full of globs and lumps
Logical but uninspired. It needs a verb form to really shine.
BUT - it's also apparently a platform.
"Glumpy is a python library for scientific visualization that is both fast, scalable and beautiful. Glumpy offers an intuitive interface between numpy and modern OpenGL."
Scientific platforms named Glumpy and numpy. That's... a choice.
You okay there, scientists?

"You are Shakespeare. You can even create new words..."
I don't know if I feel validated or called out for my loose criteria for what constitutes a "word."

Random Posting
Jun. 4th, 2022 02:19 am(That's both a title and mission statement).
Decided I will try to post here once a month-ish, even if it's just random foolishness. I have a separate, locked drama blog that I'm regularish on, but there are people friended here and not there so I should start posting my stupider, funner randomness here. (Side note: sentence structure and realness of words is flexible when it's 2AM).
SO.....
My middle of the night revelation; Google maps walking directions are either designed by a troll with homicidal tendencies or an AI who hates us and wants us dead. (If Google gets self driving cars on the road, we're all doomed).
So a couple months ago, we set up an urban hike for the Scouts - our famous Ice Cream Crawl. (Just like it sounds we spend approx 4 hours and 5 five miles hitting every Ice Cream seller we can). I tried to use Google maps to set a 5 mile route since it has the handy mileage tracker and lets you have stops.
And...
It USED TO warn you...BIG disclaimer - "walking routes [biking routes] not checked for safety." Fine. EXCEPT of course when I went to look just now, those warnings are GONE. Umm...
I think we need a visual to grasp the horror.

Seriously Committed to my non resolutions
May. 1st, 2022 12:00 pmSo I noticed a Jan 2021 post listing "Things I'll get to one of these days." And lol my Spring 2022 update on that would be:
1) "Get back to my classic Who rewatch." One of these days is still not now. My Britbox account is used less for Jane Eyre rewatching and more for Death in Paradise, but yeah. (facepalm.gif etc etc)
2) "Watch Thirteen's first season blu-ray that has been sitting unopened on my shelf since LAST [2019] Christmas. I mean...." Oh. Right. I own that. Huh.
Things I did instead...
1)Studiously ignore my original fic Open Scrivener stare blankly at words. Turn on Youtube and watch DIY vids until I fall asleep.
2) Read a fuckton of books.
Maybe I should just review books instead. Like I have a goodreads account but I feel weird reviewing there unless I REALLY need to remind myself why I just can't with this book. I mean I guess I kinda feel weird writing reviews the actual author could actually see. (Except that one non-fiction book I accidentally read that was totally horrible and pretty racist because fuck that guy.) I also find the five star system a little baffling so I just use it for myself like:
* = why did I read this why why why/brain bleach/rage/sob/traumatized
** = I had a terrible time but I don't need brain bleach
*** I liked it in a generic way but I'll probably not give it another thought/The library had it so I read it *shrug*
**** It was pretty good, I might think about it/re-read it
***** Loved it/bought it/hoarding it from the library/flipping my shit in fangirl meltdown
Looks really all or nothing spelled out like that, lol.
I dunno. I'm just as likely to go sulk on Youtube a lot instead.

I am still binging DW - old-skool and New - and one of these days I'll write about them...
But in the meantime, with all the fun and games with photobucket I started weighing my options. This included a little archeology, namely investigating all the things I abandoned on gdocs when it turned to Drive and got bad. Apparently, I abandoned a lot. There was even ready to post fic and fic that is partly done and stills speaks to me enough to maybe get finished.
Two fics have gone up on Ao3. I'll either link them or post them here shortly. And also I realized pathetically I never added my only long-fic, Laughing at Stars, to my masterlist. So that's done (at least on LJ - my masterlist on dreamwidth is just the import with LJ links. One of these days I'll fix that.) But today I uploaded Stars to Ao3 and spend the rest of the day wrangling artwork and formatting. X_X
And on a side note- does anyone know what's up with TSP? They've been down for over 24 hours now. I was in the middle of rereading a very long fic series.

Well Big Finish has sucked me back into this fandom. Yay? What can I say, I can't stay away.
So because I love a good survey and have been on BBCA panel forever, I got invited to beta test Britbox. I wish I could have given them rave reviews, but it was thoroughly underwhelming. (I made it clear in their market testing surveys that I considered a no-Doctor BBC/BBCA streaming service a deal breaker.) And low and behold when it debuted guess what? No Doctor Who. No sci-fi at all. And no anything I'd ever heard of either - aside from Absolutely Fabulous and Are You Being Served. I can see better BBC stuff on Netflix and frankly on my DVD shelf. And I then I found out ITV was part of this. Where was all the good ITV stuff? I mean - The Thunderbirds, The Avengers? And not my thing but come on- what about The Saint and The Prisoner?
But if you love Britain's Most Boring Documentaries (Planet Earth? Hahaha, no), or lots of soap operas and a bunch dramas so slow they are rated an insomnia cure, you are all set.
And on that note you know what else it lacked? One single kid's show. Even Netflix has offerings like The Sparticle Mystery which is bad and kinda does everything wrong, but hey, it's offered.
So I made all this clear in my beta panel surveys and I was ready to hit cancel the second my 90 day beta ended. (They were launching at the point and it would cost actual money.) Then I guess they heard the boos and just before the beta ended, they added classic DW and Red Dwarf. (I'm not a fan of the latter but Junior is.) So DH and I decided to let it ride a month and see what happens. So to make it worthwhile I needed to start watching DW. It was on Hulu for a while, but somehow all the ads made it unappealing. I'll probably be reviewing my rewatch here, because a lot of these are so much better than I remembered. It was hard work being a PSB DW viewer as a kid and knowing that watching meant you were plunking yourself down for 90 minutes of viewing while your Saturday morning ticked away.
So this turned into a bit of a rant so I'm going to shut up now. I meant to write just a short note that I was going to review the eps on my rewatch. So see you then.

Steampunk or Goth?
Mar. 21st, 2011 05:52 pmI found this quiz here via my other LJ and I just had to share.
By a slim margin, I am Goth apparently. LOL
