Yeah, I know I'm seriously skipping around now and I've gone from rewatch to actual first time watch. Oh, well, sorry, not sorry. Like the Doctor I have trouble being linear.

Spyfall  Parts 1 & 2

So I do enjoy Thirteen. She's random, and rambly and unhinged and in general very Doctor-y.

Part 1

I appreciated the cheesy James bond references. Maybe if you were a James bond fan you might find them fun/annoying. I'm very much not a fan so I liked the send up.

Despite the fact that a lot happens in the first ep, it feels like it moves very leisurely through the story telling. So in a way, It feels very old skool Who with a slower story that takes it's time and leaves you with a cliffhanger.

The Master reveal was good. He's back to full tilt bonkers and I enjoyed that. Whereas Missy was almost (almost) stable, this Master is completely, gloriously unhinged.

Part 2

Now this ep is a ride.  The time jumping, the call back to Sim Master with the companions being forced into hiding, the unexpectedly villainous human accomplice.

And they even managed to squeeze in a "notable women in history" tour. Lol

And the Morse Code heartbeats was just good.

Companion trauma:  zapped to another universe and chucked to Australia

I would love you show you pics but I haven't found a replacement upload site yet.  But I working on a little crochet garland.  I have the base done and I trying to decide what to hang on it.   I'm leaning toward teeny little stuffed bunnies.  Will think about it.

Well - I meant to post, but today was a DAY (it's Fall after all, and Fall is cursed in my world)

So it's pushing midnight, and I have STUFF TO DO all weekend week month IDEK.  Ask me next week.

But in my overtired derangement I plan to rant smugly about how all us crazies writing about the Fourteenth Doctor in our made up Fourteen-verse* have now been weirdly vindicated and  - what's the opposite of Jossed? - IDK but whatever it is THAT.

**wanders off cackling manically**

I daily posted on two blogs last year, don't know if I'll do it again.

But, I'm keeping my options open.

Here:  Have Hozier covering an Ariana Grande song.

So I'm gonna wrap up a month of silly posts with my silliest fandom.

Marble racing.  It got a boost during lockdown because of John Oliver, but ha, I was watching it way before then thanks to YT deciding so you like domino knockdowns? Then watch these marbles loser.

And, I mean, it was totally right. ( And yes, I did say domino knock-down vids. But to be fair as a kid  I was using my domino sets to to knock down more than I ever used them to play. )

So I'll take you back to the early days when Greg Woods first started with his commentary.  He started out as fan and ended up an integral part of the channel.  It's all much more polished and pro now, but there's something charming about the early vids.

And since I mentioned it, if you want dominoes watch Hevesh5 and Flippycat.

I've only recently started using my long ignored Twitter account.  I've never liked the site much, basically only logged in when some major news thing was happening.  So I can't feel personally too disturbed by what's happening, but it's weird to see a mass exodus of fandoms, + others from a media site.  AGAIN.  Feels all too familiar really.  Except LJ was so niche the media seemed more bemused than anything else about it.  Seems ironic, they are losing their minds now a bit.

A large chunk of my follows are decamping to Mastodon.  Which likewise seems overrated? IDK.  But I made an account anyway.  *sigh*

So Wednesday Adams, Girl Detective is a thing now?

I've only seen parts a few eps as DH is watching, but I'll probably end up watching later.   Even though, I baffled at how creepy child/teen Wednesday has become a thing.

It occurred to that it's almost more fanon that canon at this point.  The original strips don't really lend themselves to that and the first adaption in the TV show was everything the movies aren't.  From what I've seen, it's basically the only sitcom of that time period where the parents are actually competent without being a walking cliche, the parents actually like each other and family isn't all about "what will the neighbors think."

I guess it just annoys me how the newer versions took a warm, happy family and made them just another goth cliche.

I mean this ep is one of my favorites and it's pretty much the opposite of Wednesday-as-creepy-child-trope.

Running out of fannish things to write about is you can't tell. I've resorted to flailing nonsensically about libraries for no good reason.
(Though I am 118/100 in my goodreads challenge goal. And about 90% of that are library books. That may be why.)

I've read so many books, my webtoons and AO3 reading list is unreasonable rn. Oh - I suppose I can rec webtoons. Go check it out, there is probably something for everyone, there is so much. I'm currently reading Castle Swimmer,  Heartstopper, and everything by Sigeel.

So spent my Black Friday at the comic book store and found my mom's xmas gift right away.

I mean come on, No brainer.  I would prefer a non-Mirror-Mirror verse Spock, but he's still cute.  But Kirk's chair?  Awesome.

Here's my favorite bit of Thanksgiving dark humor from 1978.

glory_jean: (Default)
SO. It all started with our xmas light string. It sparked when we plugged it in. E-waste it is then. No big loss. It's very old, originally incandescent C9s that we've been replacing with LED C9s as they burn out. We then had to go searching for 25-50 bulbs C9 LED strings to replace our dead raingutter set, one (25) bulb or both sets (50 bulb). DH searched around town today, but no one had them. Plenty of LEDs no, C9s. (We have so many replacement bulbs).

So I thought I'd search at Big Lots since they've been frantically emailing about their xmas decorations. And I found the C9 string right away. Win. Then I thought I would check if they have any Star Wars mugs this year. (Nevermind my cupboard is bursting with Star Wars - and non-Star Wars- mugs. Can never have too many SW mugs. Right?) Trouble is, I just searched Star Wars and I found...

Annoyingly I had too much to do today to do any fangirling.  (I mean I did watch AFV while waiting for workmen to arrive, but only because no thinking is required for home vids).

I can rec  a Doctor Who podcast, by Stephen Willis of Doctor Who Fan Orchestra fame.   It's basically a rewatch of New Who, (for him) with a first time viewer of the show.  So might be fun for fans.  It called  About Time and the first ep is up.  Give it a try.  I found it entertaining.

glory_jean: (Default)
Doctor Who: So I watched the Key to Time series and took basically no notes. And it's been long enough I can't just write about them well.  So I guess I have to rewatch the rewatch. (Again, bad at rewatching.)  I just... don't enjoy Key to Time.  Maybe I could skip and come back to it. It's not like I've been doing this rewatch in another other than chaotic.  I'll give it some thought.

Romcoms: I half joked about doing a romcom watch and posting my quibbles and rants and trope stats.  Well. The universe seems to have spoken? This morning I got an email from HBO Max telling me all about all the romcoms they have to watch.  (Well, like 5 of them.  And only I had heard of.  Frankly, I think they were pushing the definition of "romcom" to the breaking point.)  So I might just have to do it.  Just because it might be funny.
glory_jean: (Default)
Nothing interesting fandom wise to post. But I was rereading my romcom post and now I'm half-tempted to start watching/re-watching romcoms and livebloging them a la my Doctor Who rewatches, lol.  It would at least be fun to log trope stats and rate how annoyed I am.  Do I really want to do this to myself? Time will tell.
glory_jean: (Default)

Did some non specific fanish stuff today.   Spent some time on, Tumblr and Discord, caught up on my Youtube queue.

So my fandom share is Watcher.  Founded by the Ghoul Boys of Buzzfeed fame.

Namely Puppet History  and Ghost Files.  But mostly Puppet History.  You think it's a silly little history game show and then you find out it's a silly history game with MYTHOLOGY.

Seriously, just watch it.

glory_jean: (Default)
So I basically have a dysfunctional relationship with romcoms.  I watch them obsessively while at the same time kinda hating them? There are some tropes that just drive me bonkers. (The run to the airport being one. UGH.)

But some of my favorite romcoms are now not movies but books.  So I've been reading tons of romcoms via the four libraries I have cards for.  So, even though I've got a hate on for reality TV, I've been reading a baking show themed romcom series and I had the newest book on request from a library.  And today - the day I needed to bake for a pot luck we are going to this weekend- the book became available.

So I'm baking and reading about baking... it's all very meta.

Anyway so this is the book .

So- Ticketmaster finally proved how garbage it is, AG want to investigate and Switfties are going to war.   Twitter is death spiraling and every trending hashtag is some variation of RIPTwitter.

Twitter feels very familiar **cough**LJ**cough**  but even crazy faster.  And LJ was so much more niche and insular and no one understood it.  Now it's like, now who's crying?  I can't help feeling Musk did this on purpose like some sort of Illuminati/oligarch conspiracy theory plot to ruin a large scale protest mecca.   Who's to day. It sounds like some truth is stranger than fiction spy novel level stuff.
glory_jean: (Default)
Because I'm still totally blaming time change for all the tireds.

So I should probably make a post about an obvious  fandom I don't think about, and that's all the dang books I read. I usually set 100 books on my goodreads challenge and generally read about that many each year.  (So if you're psyched to know what I'm reading DM me and I'll friend you over there, lol.)  But, yeah too tired for that.

So I'll just post the music I'm squeeing over.  (Remember when LJ had that extension where it could grab the music on your media player and plug it into your posts?  Before you could just stream on YT or where ever.)

Anyway, so (speaking of Youtube) the almighty algorithm served me up the first single from the first Album Darren Hayes has done in 10 years and I suddenly remembered how much love Savage Garden and then I somehow followed him on Insta and now I've somehow downloaded 2 solo albums I couldn't buy back then because poverty and now I have entire playlists on my phone with one artist and no I'm not obsessing you are.

So wanted or not, I'm embedding some of my fav videos

more under the cut )

No, not really. But I have found a couple new shows to watch.

I was loafing around on HBO Max today and found a British show called Ghosts.  (Apparently there's an American version that's almost a carbon copy except the ghosts are historical to the Americas rather than UK.  But it's locked down on CBS so eh, whatever.)   I've watched about 4 eps so far and it's entertaining enough.  Funny,  but not hysterically.  Silly without being OTT (so far.)  There's three seasons online, so I still have a lot of eps to watch.

I didn't mean to start a second show today, but when I exited Ghosts,  Los Espookies,  came up on the suggested list.  I'd meant to check that one out, so I clicked on it to watch a few minutes.  Two episodes later....  Yeah, kinda hooked.  It's deeply weird; occupying a space somewhere between farce and magical realism.

So I'll probably continue to watch both (but, not planning to join any new fandoms. Today.)

She Hulk

So I finally saw the ending ep of She-Hulk .. and it was completely bonkers.  Utter chaos.  I approve.

The first ep did not grab me at all. I was surprised it was supposed to be a comedy.  The second was better, but the eps were a bit uneven and it seemed to have trouble with that comedy-drama line.  Marvel is clearly experimenting with form (and maybe resigning themselves to a universe where Ryan Reynolds/Deadpool exists, lol) and maybe this will lead to better things down the line.

And Slight spoiler if you care:
