So awhile ago I ranted about how disappointing Britbox was. And just when I was going to cancel after the beta-testing ended, they plunked all of Classic Who there. So we ponied up the first month's fee. (Thus inspiring my re-watch posts.)

Well tonight I was loafing around YT and discovered clip for An Adventure in Time and Space. Something I'd entirely missed due to my absence from general fandom (and the general suckiness of Tumblr* at spreading DW news).

The clips looked amazing so I immediately scoured the internet for a way to watch it. Netflix failed me, Amazon only turned up a Blue-ray copy after some aggressive searching and IMDb was utter fail at linking. Belatedly I thought, well let me search Britbox. I pasted it into the search expecting nothing. So it took me a minute to figure out what was happening when the site not only turned up a result but went ahead and started playing it. There may have been an unearthly fangirl squee when my brain finally shifted into gear.

The family ended up watching it as well. It was lovely and sad. I knew some about the history of course. All that time spent on the forums weren't for naught. But it's different seeing it dramatized. I never knew how much Harnell loved the show. It was a bit heartbreaking.

DH is now determined to watch all the Hartnell eps on Britbox. (DH is movie crier and I know this got to him too.) So I guess my re-watch list is growing. (Though these don't count as rewatch, just a new-to-me.)

So you win this round, Britbox.

*And in other news: Tumblr sucks. (Sorry, had to get my quota in for the day.)

So since I haven't gotten around to writing more about the rewatch, I thought I'd post about the new stuff.

We pretty much gave up on Eleven after the Pandorica. We were pretty hit n miss on eps before that since we haven't had live TV for years and my mom resents DW and the use of her DVR for it.

We did manage to watch part of Twelve's first ep but nothing since. But then Junior caught Smile when were over at my mom's on a Saturday. I missed the first 20 minutes. We saw The Pilot on BBCA's site as a promo freebie. And then Junior sweet-talked his grandma into a little DVR space.

So I was dubious about Twelve. I sorta afraid he was another Three. (Three will always be number 12 on my list of top 12 Doctors. ;) BTW my current ranking is Five, Ten, Eight, Nine, Four, Seven, Twelve, Two, Six, One, Eleven, Three) But I'm good. I'm sold.

The eps - Spoilers ahoy

The Pilot- Getting a little tired of zombie-type stuff (mostly because after watching the original Walking Dead with my dad as a child, I'd reached my quota for zombie stuff for all time. So the latest zombie craze kinda makes me want to punch something.) But at least this wasn't all that zombie-like. I really liked Bill and how she's not overly wowed by Twelve. I found it interesting that they revisited the Time Lord hiding out in a university idea from Shada. The Vault is some new weirdness. I've seen clips from The Husbands of River Song, but that gives me clue who Nardole is, so we are having to just shrug and go with it.

Smile - I missed the beginning but it was an okay ep. Pretty typical stuff. Seemed more like one of the shorts you'd get in the annual storybooks than a full ep though.

Thin Ice- My first thought on seeing the monster was whether this was the levitation thing from that ep of Torchwood. Would give an explanation for how it ended up on Earth. Finally started to get a feeling to Twelve's personality. The grumpiness is growing on me and starting to feel endearing. Not a bad ep.

Knock Knock- Not as scary as the previews made it seem. A couple of reviews I read said much the same, but I'd hoped they were wrong. Oh well. I'm fine with the "everybody lives" stuff in this ep - well except for the "villains". Sometime the body count gets to be a bit much. Finding myself liking Bill for trying to compartmentalize her life and not letting her time traveling take over everything. New Who tends to overdo the angst factor, IMO. Missed most of the vault stuff in this one. The DVR always cuts off the end.

Oxygen- Zombies but not zombies. Okay, I guess I can let this pass. I did like the not at all subtle slams on capitalism. The Doctor's blindness is interesting, but this season's plot arc seems uncharacteristically subtle for the Moff. I'm happy most of the eps are being done by other writers. This one did have some good scares I have to admit.

Extremis - I'm on the fence about whether I like it or not. All the suicides seem a bit OTT for the matrix thing. Did the book mention the alien invasion? I wasn't quite clear on that. I suppose that would explain the suicides though. The bit where the monk was speaking Italian bothered me, because the TARDIS should have been translating. It didn't occur to until someone else brought it up that that was a clue. Clever. And the Master is in the vault. The MOff's not even trying anymore. The was my very first guess. Ten always wanted to keep him, remember? The ep had a good ending I thought.

Okay -so I've listened to the first two Eight and Charley seasons in pretty random order. I heard Neverland and Zagreus on the library site and that cliffhanger has been killing me ever since. I bought the last two unheard season 2 audios - Time of the Daleks and Embrace the Darkness, plus Sherzo - and told myself I was going to listen to them before moving on to season 3.

Well, how do you think that worked out? ;)

So I stayed up until stupid o' clock last night listening to Sherzo. (I d/l in MP3 format and I was going to just *one* track. umm.) And *dies* It was terrible and wonderful and dark and lovely and unsettling .....ugh. It wasn't as bleak as I'd feared though. The quotes and edited together clips on Tumblr and YT made me fear the worst. Instead it was much more hopeful than I expected. Eight has been half-insane since the end of Neverland and this finally sees him starting to struggle his way back to finding himself. And... I think I need to listen to it again.

So I've been working all week at volunteer stuff and just wanted to sit down tonight to listen to one of the three new BF audios I bought last night (yay, for mom's day presents) but when I went to d/l - oh look the site is down. *cries* So guess it's a good time to review some Old Skool DW.

Two - Tomb of the Cybermen

So we started with Two. I was seriously pleasantly surprised. I was expecting lots of wobbly sets and sloooow stories. So far I've only gotten through the first two One stories and I found them so terribly slow. The only second Doctor stories I'd seen until now were the bits and pieces from my Lost in Time set. But the story moved well, the cybermen in this were Much better and much scarier than the cybermen in the Four episode I watched (more on this later). This was also my first time seeing an ep with Victoria and I liked her pretty well.

I don't like using number ratings because it seems very arbitrary and I always overthink, so I'll just categorize this one as fun and would watch again.

Well Big Finish has sucked me back into this fandom. Yay? What can I say, I can't stay away.

So because I love a good survey and have been on BBCA panel forever, I got invited to beta test Britbox. I wish I could have given them rave reviews, but it was thoroughly underwhelming. (I made it clear in their market testing surveys that I considered a no-Doctor BBC/BBCA streaming service a deal breaker.) And low and behold when it debuted guess what? No Doctor Who. No sci-fi at all. And no anything I'd ever heard of either - aside from Absolutely Fabulous and Are You Being Served. I can see better BBC stuff on Netflix and frankly on my DVD shelf. And I then I found out ITV was part of this. Where was all the good ITV stuff? I mean - The Thunderbirds, The Avengers? And not my thing but come on- what about The Saint and The Prisoner?

But if you love Britain's Most Boring Documentaries (Planet Earth? Hahaha, no), or lots of soap operas and a bunch dramas so slow they are rated an insomnia cure, you are all set.

And on that note you know what else it lacked? One single kid's show. Even Netflix has offerings like The Sparticle Mystery which is bad and kinda does everything wrong, but hey, it's offered.

So I made all this clear in my beta panel surveys and I was ready to hit cancel the second my 90 day beta ended. (They were launching at the point and it would cost actual money.) Then I guess they heard the boos and just before the beta ended, they added classic DW and Red Dwarf. (I'm not a fan of the latter but Junior is.) So DH and I decided to let it ride a month and see what happens. So to make it worthwhile I needed to start watching DW. It was on Hulu for a while, but somehow all the ads made it unappealing. I'll probably be reviewing my rewatch here, because a lot of these are so much better than I remembered. It was hard work being a PSB DW viewer as a kid and knowing that watching meant you were plunking yourself down for 90 minutes of viewing while your Saturday morning ticked away.

So this turned into a bit of a rant so I'm going to shut up now. I meant to write just a short note that I was going to review the eps on my rewatch. So see you then.

"Again?!" Rose fumed.

"Ah, I might have forgotten one tiny detail about R'rilad society."

"Like the last two 'tiny details', Doctor?"

He rubbed the back of his neck uncomfortably. "Erm, yes. Rather like those two."

"We so need to get off this planet. Three arrests in one day is a new low, even for us."

"I think you're right, Rose."

He noted the convent display rack in the narrow marketplace corridor they were being herded through. He caught Rose's eye, tilting his head in its direction. Rose gave him a sly grin.

"I think I know what happens next."

"Run!"

Prologue )

Okay - it seems I have a bit of a love-hate thing going on with BBC Worldwide. The DVD distribution arm that is. Ever since DW S3 came out BBC Worldwide has embraced the Disneyesque passion for an excessive amount of trailers for their DVDs before the opening menu. Sounds okay in principle but it's their choice of trailers that's at issue.

On S3 that includes family friendly shows like MI-5 and Torchwood. (Which honestly were questionable but the trailers were not inappropriate.) Then we come to Jekyll and we see This. (Not the exact trailer but very close.) My son was just about eight when he saw that. I was out of the room when the DVD started up and came back in time to see all the bloody shirt/menacing kids scenes and my horrified boy standing frozen in front of the TV. Cue kid nightmares and being terrified to watch any of S3 for a while.

I ranted about it on some forum or another and was advised to complain at the BBCA website. I tried but the site kept eating my entry so I decided to try later and somehow never did.

Fast forward a few years. So far the S4 ads have been pretty tame (but I haven't watched all the disks) and we don't have S5. What we do have is all theSarah Jane Adventures.

I was living in hope that BBC Worldwide had learned their lesson. Then we got SJA S3 a couple months back. And on disk two was an ad for Children of Earth. A particularly lovely one too.(Sorry about text overlays from some pirate site. They are the only ones who posted that one. Huh, wonder why.) I especially love the burnt-up, screaming man part.

Now people argue and fuss at me for calling DW a kid's show. Thus the PG-13/R rated trailers *may* (and this is the most qualified "may" ever) be excusable. But I defy anyone to tell me a CBBC show is the place for a trailer like that. (Because young kids need to see stories about adults utterly betraying them?)

So after that tl;dr, my question is thus: how crazed mom should I go about all this and what exactly should I say. Whenever I think of think of it, I want to meta all day and probably come off sounding like Mary Whitehouse. **sigh**

I know better than most that my son blinks at things other kids are blind to. I know he's an extreme pacifist who at eleven is just now deciding that while it's still not okay to have a gun shown in a fictional setting, it's not always a deal-breaker. As long no one gets shot graphically. And as long the film is PG-13 or less. And not a drama. (IE comedy, light action/adventure.)

But I'm not overreacting, am I? Honestly?

Eleven

Because I know you all are intensely interested in this, I'm finally as caught up on Eleven eps as I'm going to be until 1) my mother's DVR decides it doesn't hate DW after all or 2) S5 gets cheap enough to buy.

The kid was having some serious DW withdrawal so we spent some quality time with my parents DVR yesterday and saw the Van Gogh ep, The Big Bang and the Christmas one. Oh and the last 4 minutes of The Lodger. This was the clearly the DVR's way of blowing a big fat raspberry at us. Well that and the failure to record the first part of the season ender. TBB might made a lot more sense that way. Or.. maybe not. I've read the spoilers. ;)

I did like the Van Gogh one well enough and the Christmas one was pretty good. We'll have to see how S6 goes. I like the look of the promos but that Ooooh, someone's gonna diiiiee thing of SM's is making me eyeroll all over the place.
